Title taken by the Leeds and Thirsk Railway on 3rd July 1851. Opened lines in 1851 and 1852 but was dissolved by an NER act on 31st July 1854 and vested into the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway which thereafter became part of the North Eastern Railway.
