The Institution of Locomotive Engineers was founded in London in 1911 for the purpose of the 'dissemination of information concerning Locomotive Engineering and its allied sciences'. The organisation was active in this role until 1969 when it merged with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as its Railway Division (one of the eight divisions the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has). The Institution of Mechanical Engineers was founded in 1847 and is still active today with a railway division.
