1845 - moved with his family to London. 1850 - entered King's College. 1853 - worked alongside Michael Faraday. 1856 - appointed superintendent of the Electric Telegraph Company's south-western district at Southampton. 1881 - elected a fellow of the Royal Society. 1899 - made a KCB. 1911 - awarded an honorary DSc degree by the University of Wales.
