Born Morrisania, New York state 1816; trained and practiced as a lawyer from 1837; took up science and astronomy on 1849; pioneer in spectral analysis and astrophotography, for which he developed special diffraction gratings and micrometers; one of the original members of the American National Academy of Sciences in 1863 and was Fellow of Royal Astronomical Society.
