Held professorship at Queen's College Belfast (1845-79). Most important researches were those dealing with heat of combination, ozone, and the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states of matter. Most significant discovery was the existence of a critical temperature above which a gas cannot be converted into a liquid by pressure.
