Educated at Manchester College of Technology; in 1911 he became associated with Alliott Verdon-Roe, a pioneer of British aviation; formed A V Roe & Co. Ltd with Vernon-Roe, R J Parrott and Roy H Dobson which designed and manufactured aeroplanes; he was appointed CBE in 1944 and was fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
