NOTE: There are at least three alternate spellings of Rejlander's first name: ODND uses Gustaf, Getty ULAN use Gustave and the RPS use Gustaf. NMeM have gone with the generally accepted spelling in the British photographic community of 'Gustaf'. Originally a painter Rejlander took up photography to aid his painting; developed a technique of combining multiple negatives to produce a single print; often inspired by historical or Biblical subjects these photographs were the equivalent of the Salon, or History paintings; Rejlander also provided the photographic illustrations of human emotions for Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) book 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals', published in London in 1872.
