1880 - Alexander George Thornton set up A G. Thornton Limited as a stationery manufacturer, in Manchester. c1900 - company had expanded, and had begun to produce surveying and scientific equipment. Produced the Jaywess series of drawing instruments, which were their cheapest range and were aimed at technical schools. 1967 - company changed name to British Thornton; 1992 - company merged with ESF
