1777 - moved to Rome where he studied the old masters. 1784 - became drawing master at the Philanthropinum in Dessau. 1786 - made a fellow at the Berlin Academy of Art. 1787 - professor of the Kunstakademie in Berlin. 1791 - went to Naples and made a series of drawings of Lady Hamilton posing as classical statuary. 1813 - went to London. 1820 - moved to Munich.
