Incorporated on 1 July 1839, the line opened formally on 6 July 1844 with passenger traffic beginning on 8 July and good on 2 September. Break of geauge problems forced the company to united in a Joint Board with the B&GR, and to negotiate with the GR or another possible buyer. The MR took over working from 7 May 1845 and absorbed the company in 1846.
