Through journeys were an important part of railway business so the companies, the North British Railway, the North Eastern Railway and the Great Northern Railway established special rolling stock in 1860 on a collaborative basis; it was called the "East Coast Joint Stock". This was grouped into the London North Eastern Railway in 1923.
