The Lancaster and Carlisle Railway was authorised on 6 June 1844 to build a line between Lancaster and Carlisle in North-West England. The first section of this line was opened on 22nd September 1846 and ran been Lancaster and Oxenholme. After been a relitavely profitable company it was taken over by London & North Western Railway in 1879. The line survives to this day (2008), and is part of the West Coast Main Line route between Glasgow and London
