1848 - formed from Ditchburn and Mare following the retirement of Joseph Ditchburn and a falling out between the two owners. 1856 - Charles Mare declared bankrupt and the company taken over by his father-in-law Peter Rolt and reformed as Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company.
