1858 - patent for Improvements in windlasses. 1859 - patent for Improvements in machinery for cutting and smoothing the surfaces of metallic nuts. 1869 - became a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. 1875 - provisional patent given for the invention of " improvements in capstans, cable holders, and cable stoppers." 1876 - promoted to Captain in the Middlesex Yeomanry. 1880 - promoted from Captain to Lieutenant-Colonel in the Middlesex Yeomanry. 1890 - Defence Vessel Construction Company Limited, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Durham, wound up and renamed Harfield and Co. 1906 - Brown and Harfield wound down and renamed Harfield and Co.
