The Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company was established in 1864, by Thomas Powell. As the name suggests, the company was initially a producer of coal; however, in 1935, the company exanded in to production and repair of railway wagons and the Cambrian Wagon Works Ltd was established, as part of Powell Duffryn Associated Collieries. During the early 1950s the name was changed to Cambriam Wagon & Engineering Co. Ltd and then, finally, in August 1959 to Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd. Despite enduring turbulent times in the 1980s the company is still in existance today.
