In 1949, the Deutsche Bundesbahn succeeded the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft as the new federal railway for West Germany. The DB remained the state railway until after German reunification, when it was merged with the former East German Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) to form Deutsche Bahn AG, which came into existence on 1 January 1994.
