1854 - patented a rattle prevention device for windows. 1855 - patented 4-ball marine engine governor. 1856 - the marine engine governor installed on the US mail steamship, Atlantic. 1857 - travelled to Europe in order to promote the engine governor. 1864 - succeeded in having the governor installed in British navy ships. 1866 - received the James Watt medal from the Royal Polytechnic Society, London, returning to the US shortly afterwards. 1887 - published the pamphlet The Scientific Explanation of the Polar Tides and the Formation of Icebergs.
