1823 - made drawings for a new London Bridge and published a treatise on suspension bridges. 1824 - took over the Canal Ironworks, Millwall, Poplar, for the construction of machinery. 1825 - along with his brother, Samuel, he patented a mechanism for propelling steam carriages on common roads. 1826 - joined the Institution of Civil Engineers as a member. 1829 - helped to form the Diamond Steam Packet Company, and built the engines for the boats which ran between Gravesend and London. 1842 - on the death of his brother Samuel, took over the entire management of the Canal Ironworks. 1845 - patented an improved method of steam propelling machinery.
