1835 - patented a rivet machine. 1836 - along with John Gold, patented a glass-grinding and polishing machine. 1837 - in collaboration with Samuel Evers, obtained a patent which greatly facilitated the making of hexagon nuts. 1845 - moved to Le Havre, France due to his wife's ill health, where, in conjunction with a M. Labruère, founded an engineering works. 1848 - the engineering works ceased operation. 1849 - took out a patent for an amended method of screw propeller propulsion which was widely adopted by the navy. 1871 - along with Walter James Griffiths, patented a four bladed screw propeller.
