Dr Douglas A. Spencer was a major figure in the development of colour photography. He joined the Kodak Research Laboratory in 1939 and during the Second World War was in charge of research and development of aerial photography for the Royal Air Force. In 1957 he was appointed Managing Director of Kodak Limited. In 1935, aged just 34, he became the youngest person ever to be appointed President of the Royal Photographic Society.

The Vivex process was introduced by Dr Douglas A. Spencer in about 1929. It produced high-quality standardised colour prints from colour-separation negatives. At their factory in Willesden, North London, Colour Photographs (British & Foreign) Ltd produced Vivex prints until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
