1862 - company founded by James Howden, a Scottish mechanical engineer, in partnership with James Mathie. 1882 - James Howden patented the "Howden System of Forced Draught". 1900 - James Howden Hulme, nephew of James Howden, became a partner in the company. 1904 - began to manufacture steam turbines for use in power generation and became involved with James Finlay and Co, in a process for curing tea. 1915 - business is incorporated as a limited company, with name changed to James Howden & Company Limited.
