1840 - William Doxford senior started building wooden ships at Cox Green. 1857 - moved to larger premises at Pallion. William Doxford junior started working in the yard. 1864 - Pallion yard started building iron ships. 1870 - the five berth West Yard laid down. 1872 - began receiving Admiralty orders. 1878 - built workshops to build their own steam engines and boilers. 1882 - William Doxford senior died and the management of the company taken over by his sons, with William junior in overall control. 1887 - installed oil burning boilers in a torpedo boat but the Admiralty was not interested. 1891 - became a limited liability company with the capital solely owned by the Doxford family.
