The department of Biochemistry at Sheffield was founded in 1938 when Sir Hans Krebs (1900-81) was a lecturer there. The department has since merged with a number of other Departments including Microbiology and Genetics. Each has a long and distinguished record of research and teaching. Krebs was awarded the Nobel prize for his discovery in Sheffield of the tricarboxylic acid cycle.
