1811 - entered his father's engineering office. 1818 - appointed inspector of machinery and clerk of the irons (that is, dies) at the Royal Mint. 1821 - formed J. and G. Rennie at Millwall with his brother John, following the death of their father. 1822 - elected fellow of the Royal Society. 1839 - patented a conoidal screw propeller. 1841 - elected a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. 1846 - appointed chief engineer of the Namur and Liège Railway in Belgium.
