second son of Johan Ludwig; brother of Frederick Christian Lewis (1779–1856), engraver and watercolourist, William Lewis (fl. 1804–1838), amateur landscape painter, and Charles Lewis (1786–1836), bookbinder; nephew was John Frederick Lewis (1804–1876), painter of oriental subjects, and his own son, Lennard Lewis (1826–1913), was a writer and painter of watercolour landscapes who exhibited from 1848 to 1898.
