Horlicks was established by the two brothers, James and William Horlick. Born in England, they emigrated to the US in 1869. They moved to Chicago where they established the Horlick Food Company in 1875. It was their development of the malted milk drink, originally known as 'Diastoid' but later trademarked as 'malted milk' in 1887, that gave them success. In 1890, James returned to England where he established a new branch of the company. This became incorporated in 1925 as Horlicks Limited. The company is now based in Middlesex and owned by Aimia Foods.
