Served in the Roman army as a commander. In addition to his military duties, he was also responsible for organizing firefighting brigades. During the reign of Diolcletian, he was rounded up along with other Christians and was twice scourged, half-flayed alive, set on fire, and finally thrown into the river Enns with a stone around his neck. Invoked in battle and against fire. Patron saint of firefighters. Feast day is May 4.
