Formed through the amalgamation of the Finn Valley Railway (FVR) and the West Donegal Railway in 1892 when the whole track was converted to narrow gauge. After extensions to the line the company became known as the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee through the Parliamentary Act of 1906 which authorized the joint purchase of the then Donegal Railway Company by the Great Northern Railway of Ireland and the Northern Counties Committee.
