Sanctioned on 23 July 1860, opening was delayed due to financial problems but it did eventually open for goods to Langton on o19 January 1865, and throughout to the public on 17 July 1867. The line was operated by the Contractor, Frederick Furniss, until 31 January 1871 after which it was operated by the LB&SCR. The company remained independent until it was absorbed by the SR at Grouping.
