
Paul Kipfer
27 May 1931, Auguste Piccard and his assistant Paul Kipfer took off from Augsburg, Germany, and reached a record altitude of 15,785 m (51,775 ft); 27 May 1931 flying over the Bavarian Alps and making an emergency landing on the Gurgel glacier. They were the first to fly in the stratosphere, using the pressurized balloon gondola.
