Opened in 1866 to serve the Bryn Eglwys slate quarry. However the line fell into disrepair after the quarry closed in 1946. Sir Henry Haydn Jones owned the raiilway and promised to keep it open for his lifetime paying for losses himself. However when he died in 1950 it was forced to close but in 1951 it was taken over as the worlds first preservation railway line.
