Incorporated on 30 June 1864 and opened for goods on 13 September 1869, between Kirtlebridge and Bowness on 8 March 1870 and throughout on 8 August. The Caledonian Railway worked the line from the start and bought the Scottish length by an Act of 5 August 1873. The whole concern passed to the Caledonian Railway on 6 July 1895.
