Originated from Leicestershire's first line, a canal tramway opened in 1794. A railway was proposed over the route in 1834 but it was not authorized until 16 July 1874. It opened on 16 April 1883 and, despite the fact that it was not a lucrative enterprise, managed to remain independent until it was absorbed by the LMS with effect from 1 July 1923.
