Incorporated on 7 June 1836. George Hudson wished to buy the company, and when it demurred he proposed a route of his own, three miles shorter. A few days later the company's directors offered him the line at his own price. He bought it in his own name on 13 August 1844 and transferred it to the Newcastle & Durham Junction Railway three days later. It took possession on September 1.
