Incorporated on 14 July 1856 and opened on 1 February 1859. A link with Horsham, Dorking and Leatherhead Railway was authorized on 13 July 1863 and opened 23 December 1866. The line was worked by the L&SWR under lease (ratified by Parliament on 6 August 1860) until an Agreement with LB&SCR of 29 July 1859 resulted in joint working. Another (1 January 1862) established an Epsom and Leatherhead Join Committee, which administered the three lines thereafter.
