William Huskisson, was a British statesman, financier, and Member of Parliament for several constituencies, including Liverpool. He is best known today, however, as the world's first widely-reported railway casualty. He was run over by George Stephenson's locomotive engine Rocket. He was at the opening of the Manchester and Liverpool railway when he exited the carriage and went onto the other line where he was run over by the Rocket. His leg was crushed, and George Stephenson himself drove the train to Eccles but he later died.
