Authorized on 5 July 1865 and the line opened5 October 1877. On 28 February 1886 the G&SWR ceased working the line but the company continued, using stock hired from the G&SWR. It was reconstituted as the Ayreshire and Wigtownshire Railway on 23 May 1887.
