Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Grindall KCB was a British naval officer whose career encompassed the American War of Independence, French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars.
In June 1795, while commanding a ship at the Battle of Groix, a naval engagement during the French Revolutionary Wars he received a wound to his right arm. The damage turned out to be more serious than originally thought and as a consequence he lost the use of it. To help retain his independence and continue his career he had the first of a number of combination knife and forks made which allowed him to eat meals with his left hand. When Horatio Lord Nelson lost his arm in another naval battle two years later he had a similar implement made.
