Hylton, Southwick & Monkwearmouth Railway 1871 - 1876

Incorporated on 25 May 1871 with the aim of developing industry along the west bank of the Wear. It was joined by the NER at each end and was worked by that company from the outset. Financially it was not a viable concern and was vested in the NER from 1 July 1876.
