British Transport Films Collection

Photographic Collections (Railway)

1950-1986

Photographs, a collection of approximately 2,000 film and glass negatives; 5131 card-mounted silver prints; approximately 10,000 monochrome lantern slides and colour transparencies. The collection represents stills and 116 filmstrips taken during production of British Transport Films (BTF) films, covering British transport, travelogues and training, 1950-1986. Also includes notes and manuscript score for Intercity 1250. Full schedule compiled.

London Midland & Scottish Railway Collection

Photographs, a collection of approximately 3,420 silver gelatin glass negatives, 5 x 4 ins to 12 x 10 ins and approximately 225 cellulose nitrate and triacetate safety film negatives, 5 x 4 ins to 8½ x 6½ ins, featuring the operations of the London & North Western Railway and the London Midland & Scottish Railway. Covering passenger and freight services, shipping, railway staff at work, people, scenic views, c1905-1948. The work of photographers of the LNWR, LMS and British Railways (London Midland Region) based at the Publicity Department, Euston. Known as the "LMS Collections". Complete with three handwritten registers with captions to the images. Negatives are numbered from LMS 12 to 11,698, but the series is incomplete.

Sellick Collection

Photographs, a collection of approximately 1,880 safety film negatives, 35mm to 5 x 4 ins and approximately 2,000 5½ x 3½ ins silver gelatin prints, with a small quantity of postcards, featuring railways in Britain, particularly the Great Western Railway, London & South Western Railway, Southern Railway and minor railways branch lines in the West Country, c1908-1985. Also features Irish railways in 1949 and 1952. The work of R J Sellick, with prints by the Box family, W E Heyward, Locomotive & General Railway Photographs (LGRP).

A collection of approximately 101 albumen print photographs mounted in 3 albums commissioned by the Midland Railway. Consists of one brown hardback cover entitled "Photographs of the Works in Progress of the Midland Railway - Rowsley to New Mills, 1860-1865", and two red hardback covers entitled "Photographs of the Works in Progress of the Midland Railway - Extension to London", featuring the construction of St Pancras Station, 1867-1868. Photographs of St Pancras are primarily the work of J B Pyne of Haverstock Hill and J Ward of Euston Road, London.

Dearden 'Main Line' Collection

The light conditions had meant that the original negatives had not developed properly but were recovered 50 years later using digital technology. Includes posed and unposed images of passengers looking out of railway carriages and disembarking onto the platform; crowds of people including women with children; images show ticketing equipment and refreshment stands; piles of luggage on platforms; luggage being selected, secured, and carried; passengers talking to station staff; families who appear to be waiting for passengers on platforms; people embracing; a news crew recording footage

Includes two negative registers for A to E Series, one numerical, one alphabetical.

Great Eastern Railway Stratford Collection

Photographs, a collection of approximately 2,525 silver gelatin glass negatives, 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 ins, also approximately 1,800 prints of the above, mainly cyanotypes but with a small number of silver gelatin and collodion prints, most 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 ins produced by the Great Eastern Railway's Stratford Locomotive Works and featuring images of newly completed locomotives and rolling stock, stations, depots and staff at work with views of the workshop at Stratford and Temple Mills Wagon Works, London, c1890-1952. Complete with one handwritten register ordered alphabetically and numerically. The work of official photographers.

Approximately 410 cellulose nitrate film negatives (ranging in size from 60mm to 5 1/2 c 3 1/2 ins), 3 glass plate negatives and 17 silver gelatin contact prints featuring the London & North Western Railway, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, Midland Railway, North Staffordshire Railway, Southern Railway and British Railways, from c. 1920-1956. The photographs are predominantly of locomotives but also feature some stations with people and road vehicles.

Bruce Evans photographic collection of railways in China

Bruce Evans Collection. This is a collection of 7,000 35mm colour transparencies on plastic film and 250 born digital images of railways in China between 1989 and 2016. The photographs show the final years of steam on Chinese national and narrow-gauge railways. They also document the electric and diesel locomotive types during the period and include photographs of the manufacture of steam locomotives at the Tangshan works.

Also approximately 1,050 cellulose nitrate and triacetate safety negatives, 35 mm to 3½ x 2½ ins and 24 boxes of prints. Featuring construction and repair of locomotives, carriages and wagons for the Great Northern, London & North Eastern and British Railways, together with road vehicles, munitions manufacture during First World War, people, events, c1896-1967. The collection includes the work of Bagshaw & Son and official photographers based at Doncaster Works. Complete with four registers. Known as the Doncaster Works Collection.

Featuring the operations of the Midland Railway, London Midland & Scottish Railway and British Railways (London Midland Region) and covering the construction and repair of locomotives and carriages, together with stations, goods depots, civil engineering, road vehicles, people, places, publicity and events, c1885 to 1961. The work of official photographers based at Derby Works. Complete with sixteen handwritten registers. DY36 to DY46435 (incomplete).
