The Foreign Settlement
A photograph entitled 'The Foreign Settlement', taken by John Thomson, c. 1871. The photograph shows the European settlement and trading centre at Fuzhou on Nantai island, established after the Opium War of 1839 to 1842 when China was forced to accept Fuzhou as a treaty port. By the 1850s it was the main port in China and also the world’s largest tea-exporting centre.

Prison record sheet
A page from a prison record ledger, 1873. The page contains a portrait and information about a convicted criminal, Bridget Turner. Turner, a thirty-one-year-old prostitute, was arrested in Newcastle in September 1873 and sentenced to one months hard labour for stealing a shawl.

An identity photograph of William Copeland, taken by an unknown photographer in 1874. The photograph is taken from an album of prison record photographs. Copeland, aged forty-eight, was arrested in Gateshead in September 1874 and sentenced to six months hard labour for theft.
Couple with a female 'spirit'
A photograph of a couple, taken by William Hope in about 1920. A woman's face appears above the couple - identified at the time as the sister of a man prominent in the Spiritualist Church. Her cloak adds to the ethereal effect. The signature in the upper left hand corner is by one of the sitters, to authenticate the plate.
