Presentation model of field ion microscope
Presentation model of field ion microscope, made by 20th Century Electronics staff in 1968 and presented to their chairman, Gilbert Tomes. This apparatus was based upon work carried out by Dr Muller (of Geiger-Muller tube fame). It can magnify about one million times, great enough to resolve individual atoms of materials such as tungsten, iron, platinum, nickel and graphite. It was hoped that by using ions under certain circumstances, this machine would have advantages over the conventional electron microscope. The project was funded by the NRDC, who subsequently took over the completed apparatus.
