Atomic clock, Hewlett Packard caesium beam frequency standard type 5061A, No. 418, 1972. Atomic clock used at the National Physical Laboratory to define the UK’s time scale from 1972-1997. It contributed to the generation of the world’s time, known as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by the International Time Bureau (until 1988) and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (after 1988).

Varian T60 nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer; 60Mhz continuous wave, with permanent magnet. Made by Varian, Zurich, in 1969. Used in the Chemistry Dept, University College London, from 1970 to 1990, as the universal standard for undergraduate teaching and routine research. Also used by Prof Peter Garratt for research into aromaticity and annulenes in the early 1970s.

The cop stand.
Left upper limb prosthesis for a child with a very short arm and small hand, three fingers, (absent thumb and index). Two valves are sited on the inner side of the socket, operated by the rudimentary fingers. CO2 gas powered 'Otto Bock' split-hook. There is a strip of reversed chrome leather on the under surface of the forearm and on the elbow ball, to prevent the limb sliding when the child is resting on a desk or table. Made by Steeper c. 1972.
