Uher 4200 "Report Monitor Stereo" portable audio tape recorder, c. 1985. Portable tape recorder used extensively by BBC and other radio reporters. AV : 2 track stereo, 12 hours maxiumum recording time. Four recording speeds (2.4, 4.7, 9.5, 19 cm/sec). 3 permalloy heads. Could be powered by 5 x "D" cell batteries, ni-cad rechargeable battery pack, a.c. mains, or car adapter. Built in monitor speaker. Two VU meters.

Uher 4000 "Report L" Portable Audio Tape Recorder

Uher 4000 "Report L" portable audio tape recorder, 1965-66. Portable tape recorder used extensively by BBC radio reporters. Battery: 5 x 1.5 V. Four tape speeds: 15/16, 1 7/8, 3 3/4, 7 1/2 inches per second (ips). Tracks: 2, Maximum reel size: 5''. Many models were modified by the BBC to only operate at 7 1/2 ips, often by removing the speed selector knob and blanking off the hole. Using one recording speed was meant to simplify editing operations. It is not hard to see why the BBC chose this machine; performance and build quality are both excellent. It is solid, reliable, robust, lightweight, and easy to use.

Uher 4000 "Report IC" portable audio tape recorder, c. 1967-1968. Portable tape recorder used extensively by BBC radio reporters. The Uher 4000 Report IC had early Motorola-made integrated circuits for the playback and speaker amplifiers. Although the tape drive was an improvement over the earlier Uher 4000 models, the microchips were not as reliable, and had a harsher sound quality then the earlier Uher 4000 Report L and Uher 4000 Report S. Battery: 5 x 1.5 V. Four tape speeds: 15/16, 1 7/8, 3 3/4, 7 1/2 inches per second (ips). Tracks: 2, Maximum reel size: 5''.
