Hutton was a Moravian minister and bookseller.

An artist is shown among the awed visitors at the scene. Stanley's unillustrated accounts of the hot springs near Rykum and Haukadal, in Iceland, were published in two letters to Dr J Black, 1791, with Black's analysis of their waters; and in the Royal Society of Edinburgh Transactions, vol.3 Pt 2, I, 1794, p127-137 and p138-153.

The ploughmen dress in character and go through their village dragging the plough and acting the fool, a custom still practiced in Goathland, North Yorkshire (2000).
