Firgrove Mill tandem compound condensing engine, made by J. & W. McNaught, Rochdale, 1907. From 1907 to 1970, this engine drove the R. Barnes & Co. Firgrove Mill in Rochdale, which produced flannelette, also known as brushed cotton, a soft and fluffy cotton fabric most often used for bedding and children's clothes. Archive material relating to the engine is catalogued in Adlib.

'Binocular' mask.
Sterling spark transmitter and key for use on aircraft, c.1915
Sterling spark transmitter and key, by W/T factory, W.D. Southgate, British, c.1915. Used in very early aircraft wireless during the First World War. The Sterling tuned spark gap wireless transmitter operated on the frequency range of 100-260 metres. The transmitter's output of 30-40 Watts fed to the 120 feet of trailing aerial gave it an operating range of 8-10 miles. The set was usually mounted on a tray on the side of the aircraft fuselage. The trailing aerial of stranded copper wire with a 3Ib weight on the end was spooled out either from the side of aircraft fuselage alongside the wireless set or through an insulated gland in the floor.

Critical focusing through rear of gate; Vinten matte celluloid focusing screen and circle and binocular mattes in clip inside door. Footage counter (pointer missing) shoe fitting for viewfinder; carrying strap broken. Hand turned; single frame shaft. Prosthetic arm, London, 1903-1913
Arm made for a 16 year old girl with a congenital right below elbow amputation, (transverse terminal hemimelia). Because of limited elbow flexion a free-swinging leather cup socket was fitted. The forearm is connected to a lace-up arm corset by side steels thus providing the wearer with full flexion. There is an oval wrist and the rotary face has a 'key-fitting' for a wooden hand with articulated fingers and tenon thumb. In the palm there is a box-fitting to hold eating utensils and other devices. A small plain carrying-hook is in situ. Suspension is by means of a leather shoulder saddle and single strap designed to pass under the opposite axilla. Made by C.A. Hoefftoke, London c.1908.
