The photograph shows Professor R J Brocklehurst, Vice President of the Federation addressing the rally. Two Saidman brothers, Reuben and Barnet, worked as staff photographers for the Daily Herald. Their photographs are simply stamped 'Saidman' on the reverse, making it difficult to tell which of the brothers took the photograph.

The Clarion Socialist Youth Hostel was established in 1933 by the London Labour League of Youth. In 1934 over 13,000 members camped in the hostel’s grounds. Herbert Morrison (1888-1965) stands on the right. Morrison was a British Labour Party politician and cabinet minister.
