Now decaying and inadequate (no bathrooms, etc) and inhabited (in many cases) by Pakistani families escaping poverty. The undercurrent communities inhabiting the worst parts of the World's cities. Gelatin silver print entitled 'June 1969, London E1. Bathroom in the kitchen Mrs R and Lorraine. Mr & Mrs R lived with their 6 children in a damp basement flat of the decaying Rothschild Dwellings. The flat was tiny and very dark. 3 girls (13, 5 & 3) shared one bedroom, the boys (11 and twins aged 1) shared the other bedroom. Mr & Mrs R slept in the living room. There was no bathroom, no hot water, the kitchen was only big enough for 2 people to stand up in, one of the twins had a hole in the heart condition. Mr O was unemployed and had been forced to give up his new council flat in Kirkby because he could not afford the rent. They had lived in rooms, but the landlord had harassed Mrs O and threatened the children physically, so that they moved into his mother's house.
