Obverse Griffin crest: ‘Impero’, Gatehouse Halfpenny’. Reverse Large building (presumably the cotton mill). ‘Payable at the house of Thos. Scott & Co.’ Notes Thos. Scott & Co. were cotton manufacturers in Gatehouse, a village five miles from Kirkcudbright. The rate of growth of the village was such that only two years after the issue of the token, it was made a burgh.

Obverse Bust of Wilkinson, ‘John Wilkinson Iron Master’. Reverse Man at forge using a trip hammer. Notes Wilkinson was one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution. An energetic and forceful man, he was responsible for important innovations in ironmaking and shaping, including a boring mill which enabled James Watt to develop his separate condenser steam engine.

Obverse A small sailing ship: ‘The wooden walls of old England’. Reverse Bust of Earl Howe: ‘Earl Howe & the First of June 1974. Halfpenny 1795’. Notes The token commemorates the battle between the French and British fleets on 1st June 1794, when the French were beaten. Howe was the British Admiral. He was later criticised for allowing a convoy of French merchant ships from America to escape while he fought the battle.

Large manufacturers were frequently also bankers.

Reverse ‘British Justice Displayed, Erskine Gibbs’ and ‘Nov’r 22. 1794’. Also inscribed are the names of the twelve jurors. Notes Tooke was tried for high treason and acquitted. Erskine and Gibbs were defending lawyers.

Obverse Bishop Blaze and a wool comb: ‘Success to the Yorkshire woollen manufactory’. Reverse Leeds cloth hall: ‘Leeds halfpenny 1793’. Notes This is a particularly fine token with excellent detail. The building is the Mixed-cloth Hall built in 1758. With some 1,800 cloth stands and its many windows for good lighting, the hall was a notable building.

St James’ Street London. Patent cocao (sic) warehouse 1795’. Notes Cocoa is made from the seeds of the cacao plant bean. The spelling ‘cocao’ was current in 1795. The grasshopper was a symbol commonly used by grocers.

Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex halfpenny, 1791. (DH Mddx 1022). Honouring the composer Handel. Issuer Unknown. Obverse Bust of G F Handel, the composer: ‘I know that my redeemer liveth. G F Handel’. Reverse ‘Benevolent choral fund instituted 1791 for its decay’d members widows and orphans’. Notes This token was probably issued by the organisers of the fund as a means of raising money. Handel died in 1759 and the use of his name in connection with a choral fund appeal indicates the continuing popularity of his music. The quotation is from the ‘Messiah’ and the book of Job [19:25].

Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex token, late 18th century. (DH Mddx 676). Issuer Thomas Spence, date unknown (probably early 1790s). Obverse Sun with inset inscription ‘Spence’s Plan Nov. 8 1775’ and ‘Spence’s glorious plan is parochial partnership in land without private landlordism’. Reverse Cornucopia, scales and olive branch and ‘This just plan will produce everlasting peace and happiness or in fact the millennium (sic)’. Notes Spence, a bookseller and coin dealer, moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to London in 1792 and began political agitation. After several arrests and imprisonment he died in 1814 aged 64 while working to promote his radical views in support of the Luddites.

Reverse Inclined plane at Ketley. Notes William Reynolds invented the inclined plane at Ketley which linked the Ketley Canal with the Shropshire Canal, the difference in levels being some seventy feet.
