A letter written at the Killingworth Colliery by Robert but conveying the views of his father George Stephenson, gives 'the velocities at which my Father recommends his Locomotive Engines to move' with 12 wagons, each carrying 3 tons. He also gives details of loads on gradients and of rails.

Dear Sir,
I duly received your favor of the 20th Inst. I could undertake the Surveying of your intended Line of Ra1lway from Stratford to Moreton and make you out a Report of the same - I could make you a Report of the cost of laying the Rails and Blocks after the Ground is formed, bu1i I could not do this accurately as if I had surveyed it, as I ought to know where the Materials for the Horse Trackage could be got.
I would do it either for a stated Sum or so much per Day……I think it necessary to enter into any further details, until you know the feelings of your Committee on the Subject.
Having learnt that Mr. John Greaves when in this country had invited Mr. B. Thompson's Opinions on the Conveyance of Goods on Railways The remarks made in his Specification is most ridiculous, however for your Information you will receive in a day a package of Letters which will expose his extravagant Remarks, It is not my Wish to push my Plans into your Concern or I could have sent those letters long ago. I have merely sent you those Letters to enable you to answer Mr. Greaves queries, he stated to your Committe
